Modrić: a return to Real Madrid would be a dream

Luka Modrić said that one day working for Real Madrid would be a dream. He added that he is not thinking about it for now. He spoke to reporters after Spain beat Croatia 2-1.

Modrić called Real Madrid his home and the team of his life, the club where he spent 13 years. He does not want to force anything, and he wants any return to be in a role where he feels useful. He also said he had spoken with a teammate at Real Madrid to wish him well, telling him he was at one of the biggest clubs in the world. The season is long, Modrić said, and the squad has the character and the quality to turn its situation around.

Asked about his future with the Croatia national team, Modrić said he still has the passion, ambition and strength to keep playing. He could not say whether that would last two months or two years. He wants to go game by game, decide calmly and listen to his body.

On the match, Modrić said Croatia played at a good level for much of the game. They were the better side in the first half and could have led by two goals at halftime. Missing those chances against a team like Spain has a cost, he said, but he felt Croatia did not deserve to lose.

Modrić was also asked about Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal. He said he had not spoken to Ronaldo and did not know exactly what had happened. He called it a shame, and said that if Ronaldo is not to continue with the national team, the greatest player in Portugal's history deserves a proper farewell.
